The Jeep Cherokee name has been retired for quite some time, but it's about to reappear when it replaces the outgoing Jeep Liberty this year (for the 2014 model). However, the model's design doesn't look anything like it's original nameplate; it's truly a glance into the future of CUV design.
The new Jeep Cherokee comes fitted with a 3.2-liter V6 Pentastar engine that creates 271 horsepower and 239 lb.-ft. of torque- enough to tow 4,500 pounds. It will achieve 31 mpg on the highway, which is 45 percent better than the outgoing Liberty.
So what's the brand hope to accomplish with this new uniquely-designed vehicle? Perhaps most of all, the Jeep brand is concerned with staking its position in the growing CUV market. Liberty sales were steadily dropping in this crossover segment, and the uniquely-designed new Cherokee should certainly turn things around. As Mike Manley, CEO of the Jeep brand, explains, "We have had a very small share of that segment. What we have done is to produce a vehicle that is very, very capable of regaining segment share for us."1
A "Trailhawk" version of the new Cherokee will also be available and will come with such off-road-ready features as wider fender flairs and aggressive all-terrain tires, skid plates, and red front tow hooks.
Pricing hasn't been released yet for the new Cherokee, but it should be closer to the vehicle's production date, starting May 23, 2013.
